-->Persaingan di arena tablet berukuran sedang (mid-sized) kian memanas. Banyak produsen berbondong-bondong mengeluarkan tablet berukuran sedang. Dua diantaranya yang bersaing ketat adalah Apple dan Samsung.

Selain ribut soal hak paten produk, keduanya memang bersaing di pasar perangkat mobile. Samsung dan Apple menguasai lebih dari setengah pasar smartphone dunia. Samsung mulai mengambil alih pasarmobile dengan perangkat seri Galaxy.
Apple boleh saja lebih dulu mengeluarkan iPad Mini di pasar tablet menengah. Namun dengandipamerkannya Galaxy Note 8 hari ini di Mobile World Congress 2013 di Barcelona, porsi pasar tablet iPad Mini tentu bakal terancam. 

Bagaimana pun, pilihan ada di tangan konsumen. Kedua tablet ini tentu berbeda, luar dan dalam. Galaxy Note 8 mengusung sistem operasi Android, sedangkan iPad Mini menggunakan iOS. Nah, bagaimana jika spesifikasi kedua perangkat ini dibandingkan?

Dimensi dan Berat

Galaxy Note 8 sedikit lebih besar dari sisi ukuran, perbedaan terbesar terletak di panjangnya yakni selisih 11 mm. Galaxy Note 8 memiliki ukuran panjang 211 mm dengan lebar 136 mm dan tebal 7,95mm. Sedangkan iPad Mini panjangnya 200 mm, dengan lebar 135mm dan tebal 7,2 mm. 

Dari sisi berat, kedua perangkat terbilang relatif ringan. Namun Galaxy Note 8 ternyata 30 gram lebih berat daripada iPad mini. Jika Galaxy Note 8 berbobor 338 gram, iPad Mini beratnya 308 gram.

Layar

Ukuran layar kedua tablet ini beda tipis. Hanya saja layar Galaxy Note 8 sedikit lebih tajam. Galaxy Note 8 memiliki resolusi 1.280x800 piksel, dengan kepadatan piksel 189 piksel per inci (ppi). Sementara iPad Mini memiliki resolusi 1.024x768 pixel dan kepadatan piksel 163 ppi. Ini berarti Galaxy Note 8 kualitas gambar dan teks tablet Galaxy Note 8 lebih tajam dari iPad Mini.

Prosesor

Prosesor Galaxy Note 8 bisa dibilang lebih kencang, dengan prosesor quad-core A9 1.6GHz. Sementara itu Apple membekali iPad Mini dengan chip generasi terakhir A5 dual-core 1 Ghz, yang pertama kali diperkenalkan di iPad 2 pada 2011.

RAM

Galaxy Note 8 dilengkapi RAM 2GB, sedangkan iPad Mini 512 MB. Dengan RAM yang lebih besar, menutup aplikasi di Galaxy Note 8 mungkin akan jauh lebih cepat daripada di iPad Mini.

Selain itu, Galaxy Note 8 menawarkan penyimpanan tambahan dengan adanya slot kartu microSD - sesuatu yang tidak ditawarkan iPad Mini. 

Perbedaan terbesar kedua tablet ini adalah tidak adanya dukungan LTE 4G pada Galaxy Note 8. Itu mungkin bisa jadi fitur pembunuh bagi Galaxy Note 8, sebab cukup banyak pengguna yang memakai tablet untuk keperluan pekerjaan dengan koneksi internet yang mumpuni.

Kamera
Kamera adalah salah satu bagian yang penting dari tablet. Samsung dan Apple tampaknya menyadari hal ini. Samsung menyematkan kamera 5 megapiksel (MP) di bagian belakang, sementara kamera depan 1,3MP. Sedangkan iPad Mini dibekali kamera 5MP di bagian depan dan 1,2MP di belakang.

Perbedaan paling mencolok terlihat dari adanya stylus (S Pen) pada Galaxy Note 8. Stylus ini terintegrasi dengan User Interface (UI) Touchwiz ala Samsung, sehingga ketika Anda menarik keluar stylus, Galaxy Note 8 secara otomatis akan bergeser ke mode pen detection.

Samsung memang belum mengumumkan harga untuk Galaxy Note 8, tapi melihat spesifikasinya, kemungkinan tidak akan jauh beda dengan iPad Mini yang saat ini dibandrol mulai harga USD 330.

Blackberry Storm Vs Iphone 3g: Will Rim's Blackberry be Iphone Killer?

Recently I had published a side-by-side comparison of the iPhone 3G and T-Mobile G1 DVD Converter which evoked an interesting debate.(from:iphonehacks)

Here comes another side-by-side comparison of Apple's iPhone 3G with RIM's BlackBerry Storm, which is considered as another iPhone Killer.

BlackBerry Storm is expected to be released some time in November exclusively by Verizon in the US and Vodafone in UK.

Unlike T-Mobile G1 that we have reviewed earlier, BlackBerry Storm "steals" the design and looks much like the iPhone 3G. However, it does not look as sleek as iPhone 3G. It's a little bit thicker (0.14inches more) and heavier (22g more) than iPhone 3G. And, surprisingly, BlackBerry Storm does not come with Wi-Fi support or they probably consider Verizon's 3G network is good enough.

BlackBerry Storm's screen is also a little bit smaller (3.2 inch) as compared to iPhone 3G (3.5 inch), however it sports a slightly higher resolution (460x360 pixels) than iPhone 3G (460x360 pixels).

Winner: iPhone 3G

Input Method

With the success of iPhone's multi-touch interface, touch is now the standard for any new smartphone. Like iPhone, Storm does not have physical slide-out keyboard and uses the screen as input, in fact its RIM's first smartphone to feature a touch screen. However, RIM highlights that the touch technology developed on Storm is somewhat different to other touch screen smartphone available. RIM refers its touch technology as "Clickable Screen". That means, when users press key on screen, they can actually feel the key pressed and release, just like you press the mouse button. They call it a game changing touch technology that makes on-screen keyboard more appealing.

Also, like T-Mobile G1, it will have built-in cut and paste capability across applications a feature missing from iPhone 3G.

Winner:Its difficult to call a winner on this one, until we get feedback from users on RIM's touch technology. We love iPhone 3G's revolutionary multi-touch interface.

Multimedia
Multimedia support is not the strong area of RIM smartphones, as they predominantly targets business users. Storm is developed with multiple support in mind to lure more casual users. Standard feature like music and video playback is included. A wide range of audio format (including MP3, AAC, WMA, etc) and video format (including MPEG4, WMV, etc). Storm also allows you to sync iTunes music files via BlackBerry Media Sync and has its own media software to manage your music.

iPhone 3G is the best iPod Apple has ever created. The music and video playback experience is awesome. And, Apple continues to update features like Genius Playlist into iPhone makes iPhone's multimedia support nearly unbeatable. With its seamless integration with iTunes Store, you can download songs wirelessly or sync it between desktop using iTunes. iPhone 3G also supports a wide range of music formats but only plays Quick Time video.

Winner: iPhone 3G

Camera & Video Recording

Apple did not upgrade the camera in iPhone 3G, its still a basic 2 megapixel camera while Storm comes with 3.2 megapixel camera and includes video recording capability. Storm also includes a flash and auto focus for its camera.

Winner: BlackBerry Storm

Modem Capability
iPhone 3G does not support tethering and Apple tends to ban any applications in App Store that adds this capability. The only option you have is to jailbreak the iPhone and use jailbreak apps such as PDANet, iPhoneModem etc. BlackBerry Storm, on the other hands, comes with tethering built-in.

Winner: BlackBerry Storm

Enterprise Feature

Apple has made quite a few strides to take market share from RIM in the enterprise area. iPhone 3G, with built-in support for Microsoft's ActiveSync protocol, lets enterprise users to access Microsoft Exchange's services. Also, it takes a great step forwards to support Cisco IPsec VPN, which is a standard in enterprise wireless security. Further, it incorporates a feature to let administrator to wipe data remotely, in case the iPhone is lost or stolen.

RIM is always the leader in enterprise wireless devices. Storm, by no means, continues to lead in this area. The enterprise support is outstanding that different security policies can be defined, such that administrator may enable or shutdown specific bluetooth profiles; and even, to disable its digital camera access.

Winner: BlackBerry Storm

To sum up, BlackBerry strikes a balance between business and causal use. It's, by far, the sleekest BlackBerry; which should help RIM lure causal customers.

Is it another iPhone killer? Its difficult to conclude. iPhone 3G and BlackBerry both come with some unique features that neither have and they are positioned differently in the market.
However, I still fail to understand the omission of Wi-Fi in BlackBerry Storm, its true that BlackBerry is targeted at the business users who use it primarily for email, but still it seems like a major disadvantage over iPhone 3G.

As a consumer device, iPhone will definitely win thanks to the iPod application, its Safari browser which is easily the most advanced web browser on a portable device which makes browsing the internet on the iPhone a treat and overall for its cool factor. But if you turn to some business-savvy users and enterprise, BlackBerry is still the de-facto choice.

RIM has also not disclosed the pricing or the official shipping date.

Mio launches the Explora K70: beauty, 3G, and GPS abound

Mio's rumored Explora K70 is sitting pretty at CeBIT, and while we wait for the full hands-on treatment, we thought an introduction to what appears to be a stunningly loaded GPS phone was in order. Network connectivity is a blow out in the K70 with quad-band GSM, triple-band HSDPA / HSUPA, Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS which is handled by Qualcomm's gpsOne chip. The 3.5-inch touchscreen display is a 400x240 WQVGA number, a 3 megapixel camera hides around back, a jog dial's included for quick scrolling, and it is all powered by Windows Mobile 6. Looking at the spec sheets it seems there will be two different SKUs, a handset-only package and a "Full SKU" that includes in-car charger, device mount, and so forth. We're suitably impressed, expect more news including dates and pricing as soon as we can get them.

Black Berry Bold Is Overheating

NTT DoCoMo began selling the Bold in Japan last week. And so far it has sold about 4,000 devices. Of those devices, NTT DoCoMo says it has received complaints from about 30 users that the phone's keyboard area had heated up, Reuters reported. The company said it doesn't know of anyone getting burned from the overheating nor has it received any reports of the phone catching on fire.

RIM said that it is looking into the matter even though the company believes the temperatures appear to have "remained within the safety range of regulatory standards." Still, RIM and DoCoMo decided to suspend sales anyway until they can figure out what is causing the overheating.

AT&T sells the Bold in the United States, but RIM said in a statement that the overheating issue isn't a problem outside of Japan.

"This issue appears to be specifically limited to the BlackBerry Bold devices sold in Japan since last week," the company said. "And sales of BlackBerry Bold devices in other countries are unaffected by this matter."

RIM noted that it doesn't believe the problem is caused by the battery. But it's still investigating the root cause.

The world's top five cell phone

The world's top five cell phone makers have launched a common energy rating system for chargers, making it easier for consumers to compare and choose the ones consuming the least energy.



The new rating system developed and supported by LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Sony Ericsson, ranges from five stars for the most efficient chargers down to zero stars for the ones consuming the most energy.

The measure is a response by the cell phoen industry to heavy criticism from environmentalists. The industry has become the world's top consumer electronics business by volume.

Chargers continue to use electricity if left plugged into the socket, even if the phone is disconnected. Around two-thirds of the electricity used by cell phones are wasted this way.

"If the more than three billion people owning mobile devices today switched to a four- or five-star charger, this could save the same amount of energy each year as produced by two medium sized power plants," Nokia said in a statement.

The world's top four charger makers include Flextronics, China's BYD Co, Emerson Group and Finnish Salcomp.

The Nokia N810 is the third product in the Internet Tablet lineup from the Finnish handset manufacturer. Featuring a large 4.1" touchscreen with 800x480 pixel resolution and based on Maemo, a Linux based user interface, Nokia's Internet Tablets are slowly progressing from a geek toy to a consumer device.

With the N810, Nokia has added a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a built-in GPS receiver. Nokia also stuffed 2GB of built-in memory inside, with a miniSD card slot for expanded storage. The N810 retains many of the hardware features of the N800, such as a built-in VGA resolution camera for video calling, hardware buttons for zooming in and out on the interface, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The N810 uses a micro-USB port for data transfer and also sports a built-in kickstand for convenience.

With the N810, Maemo also got updated to Tablet OS2008, code named 'Chinook'. This new version adds quite a bit of eye candy, with semi-transparent menus and home screen applets, as well as a more finger-friendly menu system. Updated Flash means that YouTube videos play easily in the new Mozilla-based browser, as well.

The Nokia N810 with OS2008 also features an updated Gizmo Project client, which allows you to use the tablet as a VOIP phone, and also supports tablet-to-PC video calling. An internet radio directory is also included, so users can easily use the Nokia N810 as a portable Internet radio player. The N810's processor runs at a speedy 400MHz, which keeps the menus snappy.
